Twitter has announced a slew of new product features geared toward the platform's creators, including expanded monetization options. To begin, it is adding the ability to accept Bitcoin as a method of payment for Tips that users can send to specific authors on the platform. It is also developing additional safety features, such as the ability for users to remove themselves from a chat where they may have been marked.
"We want to go beyond 280 characters," Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter Product Lead, stated in a press release. "We want everyone on Twitter to be able to express themselves however they feel comfortable, whether through a tweet, using their actual voice in a live discussion, or through longer forms of expression like a newsletter."
Twitter has stated that the Tip Jar will be available globally on iOS, with Android support coming soon. A small number of persons in the United States were testing the feature. Everyone will now be able to send suggestions through the site. A creator or anyone with a sizable following can enable the ‘Tips Jar' in their profile, allowing users to send them money. In India, the feature already accepts RazorPay payments.
As previously reported, Twitter will now introduce Bitcoin support via Strike. The strike is a Bitcoin Lightning Network-based payment software that allows users to send and receive Bitcoin for free and instantaneously.
The business also stated that it intends to unveil some new safety features, including one called "Heads Up," which will function as a sort of trigger warning. It will warn users before they enter a potentially heated discussion. Twitter stated that this feature was still in early testing and did not provide many details on how it would determine a conversation's "vibe."
Users will now be able to withdraw themselves from a chat on Twitter. When someone decides to discreetly quit the conversation, the person who tagged the user will not be notified. The site will also include a 'word filter' tool, which would allow users to exclude particular terms from showing in their replies. When this feature will be available is unknown.
According to Twitter, there are some terms that individuals do not want to see in their replies, and this is a novel approach to preventing targeted name-calling or emoticons. However, the corporation also stated that this is still a concept that will evolve.
Twitter is also making various changes to its 'Spaces' function, which includes a live audio conversation option. Spaces will soon have the ability to record, playback, and improve discovery.
